Colne Housing Apprenticeship Scheme

Colne joined forces with Creative Learning & Skills Solutions and Haven Gateway to give tenants of the Society between the ages of 18 and 25 the chance to achieve their Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card, and to gain full time employment in the construction industry.

Five students were chosen to participate in the 12-week programme, and the students spent three months learning a range of skills including bricklaying, paving, tiling and guttering. They refurbished the grounds of one of Colne’s supported housing schemes in Colchester, as part of their training.

Each student is now on a work placement scheme with leading builders, Trevor Benton, Mersea Homes, R.G.Carter and Rose Builders after having earned their CSCS cards, vital for working on EU construction sites.

Colne is one of a very limited number of housing associations in the country who have set up an apprenticeship scheme to invest in the future of our residents and local industry in this way.

The students will be honoured later this summer at a special presentation at Colchester Town Hall.
