Latest News from the Board
The Society held its Annual General meeting, board meeting and senior staff conference in September 2008.
Bill Frame was re-elected chairman, and Justina Ridley vice-chairman. We are delighted to welcome Cllr Beverly Oxford, portfolio holder for Neighbourhoods at Colchester Borough Council, as co-opted member.
At the conference, board and senior staff had the opportunity to look at some of the key changes taking place in the outside world, not least:
- the credit crunch
- the new Homes and Communities Agency, which will fund new development
- the new Tenant Services Authority, which will regulate our work
- the changing face of local and regional government
We considered the implications of these changes in particular for our development, financial and new business activities.
Key decisions included:
- to continue our development activities in spite of market uncertainty, as there is a huge level of housing need in the areas in which we operate
- to provide homes for intermediate rent rather than shared ownership, as it is so difficult for purchasers to obtain mortgages at present
- to look at how we can attract additional grant funding both for our own activities, and to help our residents
- to continue our new business activities where they generate income to invest in our existing homes and services
