Colne honours its former Chairman

Robert Leng15th May 2008

The former chairman of leading East of England housing association Colne Housing has officially opened a block of affordable flats to rent in Clacton which carry his name.

Colne Housing’s block of four two-bedroom flats at Windmill Park has been named Leng Court in honour of the former chairman of Colne Housing, Robert Leng.

The naming ceremony and official opening was part of Colne Housing’s 35th anniversary celebrations and had been kept under wraps until the unveiling of the building’s name plaque.

The Colne Housing delegation also dedicated a new garden bench for Leng Court’s residents’ use, sporting Robert Leng’s name on an engraved plaque.

Mr Leng said: “This was a total surprise. I was the only person here who didn’t know!

“My five years as chairman gave me a fantastic opportunity to make a contribution to this organisation which is committed to providing affordable homes for people not only in Clacton but throughout North Essex.

“I was proud to lead Colne Housing at a time of expansion and growth and to have helped set its policy and future direction. It was an important job and one that carried responsibility but it was also very rewarding.”

Colne Housing’s current chairman Bill Frame added “We are delighted to make sure that Robert’s name is remembered as a former chair of Colne Housing to honour all the work he’s done over the years".

“Leng Court will be a great asset for Clacton families wanting an affordable home to rent in a market that is otherwise out of their reach.“

Colne Housing Chief Executive Mark Powell Davies said: “We are proud to be able to honour our former chairman in this way as he did so much for the organisation in helping us grow our provision of flexible and innovative affordable homes for families.”
