Colne digs deep at Myland community garden

Myland Community Garden3rd March 2008

Colchester-based Colne Housing, one of the county’s leading housing associations, has dug into its pockets for the planting of the first of 35 new trees planned for the borough as part of the association’s 35th anniversary.

Colne Housing, together with Myland Parish Council, Colchester Borough Council and other agencies, has co-funded the planting of a cherry tree in the community garden which is landscaped around a central sculpture, located on the junction of Mill Road and the Northern Approaches. More trees will be planted around the new housing development in Myland over the coming weeks.

The community garden has been developed through the Community Action Mile End (CAM) project, which was part funded by Colne Housing, and the tree planting marked the end of the first phase of laying out the garden.

The Chairman of the Northern Approaches Action Group, Myland Parish Councillor Martin Goss was joined at the planting by the team from Veolia Environmental Services. Also taking part were local Myland resident Alison McCullagh and her 21-month-old daughter Sophie.

CAM’s Community Development Officer Jo Wheatley said: “We’ve worked with many groups in the community to develop this garden over the past two years and we are delighted that the tree planting marks the end of this important phase.

“We are now looking forward to engaging all the local community, from local schools to artists and allotment holders, among others; so many people take pleasure from garden and have offered to work with us to sustain and to manage the garden in the longer term.

“We hope it will inspire other green initiatives in the Myland area.”
