Pupils unravel WW2 history with a little help from their friends

7th February 2007

Wartime memories came alive recently when a group of pupils from the Stanway School visited elderly residents from Colne Housing Society.

Residents at New Farm Lodge, Stanway were approached by history students from the school, who wanted to interview people who had recollections about the Second World War as part of their 'Oral History' module.

Heather Booth, Scheme Manager, said: "The sessions were not only useful for the students' history research, but were also beneficial in integrating the young and the old. With the school and youth club being so close to home, we wanted the youngsters to get to know the residents. We hope that by bringing them together, both the pupils and our elderly tenants will experience and appreciate each other's way of life."

Residents at the scheme, which offers sheltered accommodation for over 55s, have been involved in an ongoing partnership with the Stanway School; attending open days and performances in addition to the oral history work, in a bid to reduce the risk of anti-social behaviour in their community. Colne Housing is committed to making a positive impact in which they work and were more than happy to help the students learn about the history of their neighbours.

Alf Jenkins, Colne Housing resident at New Farm Lodge, said: "The pupils' visit brought back many memories. They were extremely well-behaved and asked astute questions about our pasts. I hope the partnership will continue in the future."
