Gardens Bloom in Brightlingsea

The award winning garden at John King Court

6th July 2007

Green-fingered residents at a sheltered housing scheme in Brightlingsea have transformed their homes into an award-winning haven for gardeners.

The 21-flat John King Court in Brightlingsea is one of a range of 200 sheltered housing properties for people aged 55 and over across Essex, which are managed by Colne Housing who have been providing affordable homes in Colchester for more than 30 years.

This summer John King Court is surrounded by well-tended gardens which have now scooped the top Silver award for design and colour at the Brightlingsea in Bloom annual competition.

The judging was held earlier than usual this summer because of the unseasonably hot spring which brought the gardens into bloom weeks earlier than normal.

Mark Powell Davies, Chief Executive at Colne Housing, said ” For many of our residents gardening is more than just a hobby- it is a way of giving their homes their own identity and taking pride in the whole development".

“We are delighted with the success of John King Court and we take pride in knowing that the gardens are acknowledged as among the finest in Brightlingsea".

“Beautiful gardens go a long way to enhance the quality of life for all our residents.”

Brightlingsea in Bloom judges gave John King Court the top award this year – and the residents are determined to repeat the honour next year.
