Colne to offer new Construction Apprenticeships in 2008

19th December 2007

A unique move to make it easier for more North Essex young people to take up a new career in construction in the New Year is being offered by Colchester-based Colne Housing and the Haven Gateway.

The leading East of England housing association, which owns or manages nearly 2,000 affordable homes in North Essex, is setting up ten new apprenticeships for its younger residents who want to work within the construction industry. The first programme will begin in January.

The apprenticeships will be jointly funded by Colne Housing and the Haven Gateway; they will also offer the opportunity for participants to gain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme card which is vital for working on EU construction sites.

Only one week after the news of the scheme went out to residents, nearly 20 have shown an interest.

Colne Housing’s Finance Director Lynne Shea says that Colne Housing is committed to quality training not only for its own staff, but for residents and the wider construction sector on which the future of affordable housing depends.

Said Lynne: “The exceptional offer of ten construction apprenticeships is a new venture for Colne Housing. We will be one of a very limited number of housing associations in the country who are set up to offer an apprenticeship scheme and to invest in the future of our residents and local industry in this way.“Construction is a priority sector for North Essex and there is great demand for qualified workers.
