Colne Housing's summer student scoops Shell award

September 2007

Colchester’s Colne Housing is celebrating after its resident undergraduate on a national training scheme scooped a major award at a ceremony held in Colchester Town Hall.

Tiptree-born Shane Leipper, aged 20, a former pupil of Thurstable School, won a commendation award in the Anglia Ruskin University-sponsored website development and database category of the Essex and Suffolk Shell Step Programme 2007.

Shane, who starts his third year of a BSc in computing and management at Loughborough University later this year, is working for Colne Housing this summer as part of the nationwide Shell Step national programme, where undergraduates are placed in businesses for up to two months to undertake a specific project.

His award commends the work he has done building the company’s intranet system using Microsoft’s SharePoint Services.
Shane said: “I really wanted to get some work experience, which is why I approached the Shell scheme.

“Working on the project has given me a lot of technical experience through learning all about SharePoint, which I wasn’t familiar with before.
“I’ve never worked in an office either and I’ve been given the responsibility of handling the project on my own, too.”

Robert Leng, chairman of Colne Housing, said: “We are delighted with the work Shane has done. I am a great supporter of the Shell Step programme because it enables smaller firms from having to go to consultants, which are perhaps swayed by experience in other areas.
“This is the second year we have had an undergraduate here from the programme and assuming we have other suitable projects we may continue to invite others.”

Shell Step is a national programme supported by Shell UK, run by the Essex Development and Regeneration Agency in Essex and Suffolk.
