Colchester Housing Association has record year thanks to New Partnership

18th May 2007

A Colchester-based housing association is celebrating its first year in a unique development partnership which provided it with over £1.5 million to build new homes throughout North Essex.

Colne Housing, which has been providing affordable homes in Colchester for over 30 years, is part of the ‘Key Communities’ partnership alongside seven other housing associations, which aims to develop new schemes throughout the East of England.

The Key Communities scheme is led by Bedfordshire Pilgrims Housing Association (BPHA). Colne has been able to access new funding to create homes for people with autism in Colchester, new affordable properties in St Osyth and the ‘Safe Haven’ scheme to encourage private sector landlords to let to people in housing need

Mark Powell Davies, Chief Executive at Colne Housing, said: “We are committed to providing high quality homes that people can afford, in communities where they want to live. As a partnership, Key Communities has proven that it can do this quickly and efficiently which is great news for local people priced out of the housing market. We are delighted that the partnership has been able to deliver the first year of its development programme so effectively, and secure new homes for North Essex.”

Figures released by Key Communities show that the partnership committed £63 million in the last 12 months on building a wide range of affordable housing across the whole region, with Colne Housing using over £1.5 million to provide affordable homes in Essex.

Colne has plans to build more than 300 affordable new homes over the next three years.

The partnership comprises of Colne Housing Society, Cotman Housing Association, Howard Cottage Housing Association, Iceni Homes, King Street Housing Society, Papworth Trust and Suffolk Housing Society, as well as BPHA.
