Resident Hero Awards

This summer, Colne launched its first ever Resident Hero Awards. The aim of this brand new scheme was to identify and celebrate those un-sung heroes living in and around your community.

The nominations for Colne's inaugural Resident Hero Awards are in and the response has been overwhelming! We have been delighted to hear about all of the individuals living in our communities that are going above and beyond the call of duty, providing vital friendship and support those in need.

To choose our final three has been a very hard decision, because in our eyes everyone nominated is a winner, but here they are: -

1. Individual Resident Hero of the Year (18+)

Mrs Sylvia Gaylard, of Orchard Lodge, was nominated by a number of residents at the Tiptree based retirement housing scheme. Described as an amazing and popular person, Sylvia puts an incredible amount of effort into organising social events and outings; as well as helping the other residents with everyday tasks, making sure that Orchard Lodge is a joyful place to live.

2. Young Resident Hero of the Year (under 18)

Alfie Young was the clear winner of this category. At just seven years old, Alfie, of Clacton on Sea, gives up his personal time at the weekends to look after and nurture the gardens of the estate - whether it is helping Mr Baker feed the chickens or tidying up the weeds. Described as a caring little boy, Alfie is very aware of looking after the environment and has his own recycling scheme set up in his home.

3. Community Resident Hero of the Year

Bill and Vi Stock are the community heroes of 2010. Mr and Mrs Stcok, of John King Court in Brightlingsea, were nominated for being helpful and putting the needs of other residents before their own - whether it is driving someone to a hospital appointment or making the garden somewhere relaxing to sit.

A massive congratulations goes out to Sylvia Gaylard, Alfie Young and Bill and Vi Stock. If you know someone who should be your resident hero, make sure to enter them into the 2011 awards.
